Orienteering! Try It!
The third of our informal monthly events for 2012

After the success of our first two informal events of the year, we look forward to seeing you again (or for the first time) at Coombs Wood, near Armathwaite.
..........

There will be an easy course ideal for beginners (about 2-3k), and a longer hard course to keep the experienced orienteers on their toes.
If you are new to the sport there will be plenty of help and advice available on the day from friendly club members, but please READ THIS first to give you an idea what it's all about.
The aim is to navigate around a course as fast as you can, using a detailed map. A compass is useful but not essential for the easy course. Wear running or walking gear (full leg cover recommended). Bring suitable footwear (you might get wet and muddy), a waterproof, and spare warm clothes and shoes.
We meet at 11am, fees are £1 for juniors and £2 for adults, and you collect your map at the event.
Please arrive in good time if you need instructions on how to participate and allow an hour or so to get round.
Be competetive, or take it steady - it's up to you. You will need a 'dibber', worn on a finger, and you can borrow one of these on the day. The 'dibber' is used to electronically record the time you find each checkpoint or 'control' on your course, and in what order. It also tells us who won! Results are published on this website - often later the same day.
Bring your own snacks, tea, coffee, water etc. and please note that there are no toilet or changing facilities at this event.
Families are welcome. Under 12's must be accompanied by an adult unless they are already experienced at orienteering. There are paths, but be aware that some parts of the wood are rough with steep slopes. Most of the easier course stays away from these. It is also worth noting that there are many indistinct paths, mountain bike tracks, smaller boulders etc not marked on the map, and there may be variations in vegetation.
Let us know in advance if you plan to bring a large party (eg. scout group) so we have plenty of maps available.
Important!
The first box to 'dib' is CLEAR which removes any timings from a previous event. (NB all control boxes will beep and flash when used correctly).
You must 'dib' the START, and even if you don't find all (or any!) of the controls on your course you still need to 'dib' the FINISH.
Lastly, always go to 'DOWNLOAD' (another box to 'dib'). At a small event this is likely to be the same place where you paid and registered your entry. You will get a printout of your results, and this also tells the organiser you are back.
Please return all hired dibbers.
If you enter, then change your mind and don't go round the course, or don't finish, let the organiser know before you leave so we don't send out a search party!
And even more importantly - enjoy yourself!
